As the world bursts into vibrant color, we are thrilled to celebrate Pride Month—a time of immense joy, profound reflection, and deep importance to us as a school.
Rooted in History, Expanding in Love
If you caught last month’s blog on the history of Body Electric, you know that our roots run deep within the LGBTQ+ community. Born in 1984 in San Francisco amidst the crucible of the gay men’s movement and the AIDS epidemic, Body Electric was founded on a revolutionary act of love: reclaiming our bodies, liberating our erotic aliveness, and healing through touch.
While our history is forever entwined with the queer liberation movement, our evolution has brought us to a beautiful, expansive truth: The Body Electric School is for EVERY BODY. Today, we strive to create a sanctuary where people of any or no gender identities, gender expressions, sexual orientations, races, abilities, body types, and backgrounds can feel safe to step into their power.
Embracing the Power of Affinity Spaces
We believe that true inclusion isn’t just about opening the doors; it’s about recognizing that creating a safer, welcoming environment sometimes means creating intentional spaces where folks can connect through shared experiences. This is why we are so proud of our affinity groups and queer-specific programming.
When you join a queer affinity space, you are stepping into a container free from societal conditioning, where you don’t have to explain or defend who you are. Instead, you are invited to just be.
This year has already been an incredible testament to the magic of these spaces. Earlier this year, we hosted the highly successful Queer PSI (Power, Surrender, & Intimacy) and Queer Tantra workshops. The energy, healing, and transformation that took place in those rooms continue to ripple through our community. Another Queer PSI has just been scheduled for January, 2027!We also regularly offer accessible, nourishing spaces, such as our free, virtual Queer Heart Circle and our relatively new Queer Eros, designed to cultivate non-binary eros, deep self-attunement, and radical community connection. (And if you’re wondering who can attend: Wenever police queerness. If “queer” is an identity that resonates with you, you are welcome here!)

The JEDI+ Committee: Keeping the Momentum Going
Our dedication to making Body Electric a home for everyone isn’t just an ideal—it’s an ongoing, active practice steered by our JEDI+ Committee.
Standing for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, the JEDI+ Committee was established as a standing committee of our Board when we transitioned to a non-profit in 2021. Meeting monthly, this committee works tirelessly from the inside out to hold the school accountable, evolve our inclusive language, and ensure our workshops remain accessible.
And what about the “+”? For us, the plus sign represents our commitment to the unknown. It means remaining humble, open to new and changing realities, and always seeking your feedback about what we might be missing.(The reason I like seeking is that it puts the responsibility on the listener to notice what might be being expressed in ways other than in words. Of course, this is an optional suggestion.)Through the JEDI+ fund, we are able to support BIPOC programming, offer scholarships to level the playing field, and expand our outreach to transgender, gender-expansive, and women’s programming.
