Restoring the Soul

Why Pleasure, Self-Care, and Somatic Work Belong to Everyone

In a world that often feels harsh, fast-paced, and deeply overwhelming, it’s easy to slip into survival mode. We push through fatigue, tune out the subtle cues our bodies send us, and treat self-care like a luxury we have to earn—or a distraction from “real” work.

Recently, our team sent out a letter for our upcoming workshop, Erotic Nourishment (and our featured women’s workshop coming this October). Reading those words again, a powerful truth stood out—one that extends far beyond a single event:

Pleasure is not a reward for productivity. Caring for your body is not self-indulgence. It is the foundation of how we show up for the world.

While Erotic Nourishment offers a dedicated, restorative space for women and gender-expansive folk to gather, the core philosophy behind it is at the very heart of everything we do at Body Electric.

Here is why this work matters so deeply—for everyone.

Oppression Conditions Disconnection

Modern culture—and systemic oppression—teaches us to disconnect from our physical selves. We are encouraged to view our bodies as machines to be optimized or tools to be used, rather than living sanctuaries of wisdom, delight, and healing.

When we operate from a place of chronic exhaustion and bodily disconnection, we lose touch with our boundaries, our intuition, and our capacity for deep, authentic relationships.

Somatic work flips this script. By learning practices of attunement—paying gentle attention to the subtle sensations within us—we begin to treat our bodies as places of safety, balance, and wholeness.

A Depleted Activist Is a Less Effective One

When the world around us hurts, taking time for joy, connection, and rest can trigger guilt. You might catch yourself asking:

  • “How can I justify taking time for myself when there is so much suffering?”
  • “Is spending energy on my own well-being selfish?”

The answer lies in a simple, profound truth: You cannot pour from an empty vessel.

As adrienne maree brown writes in Pleasure Activism:

“We cannot create conditions of flourishing for others if we have no felt experience of flourishing ourselves.”

And as Audre Lorde famously declared:

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

A person who knows how to receive care becomes a more generous giver. A community that knows how to nourish itself becomes a resilient force for change. Fortifying your inner world isn’t turning your back on the world—it’s how you gather the strength to transform it.

The Power of Gathering in Community

Whether it’s a week-long retreat like Erotic Nourishment, our autumn women’s gathering, or any of Body Electric’s open workshops, the magic always happens when we come together.

When we gather with openness, radical care, and a shared intention to slow down:

  • Awe and wonder return to our everyday lives.
  • Profound kindness replaces isolation.
  • Rediscovery happens—we reclaim parts of ourselves we thought were lost to stress or trauma.

When we nourish one another, we begin to embody the world we long to see.

Step Into Your Own Nourishment

No matter where you are on your journey, your body deserves to be a place of love, delight, and rest.

We invite you to explore our upcoming offerings:

  • Erotic Nourishment Intensive: A restorative deep dive for women and gender-expansive participants to reconnect with pleasure and somatic wisdom.
  • October Women’s Workshop: A powerful autumn space to anchor in community, truth, and embodied connection.
  • Body Electric Workshops for All: Offerings designed for people of all genders to unlock the intelligence of the body and cultivate conscious intimacy.

If something in you is feeling curious, hopeful, or ready for renewal, listen to that whisper. Step out of the noise, come back to your body, and let yourself be nourished.
